Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 and is the second oldest forts in the state of Rajasthan. This magnificent fort also known as Sonar Quila is a perfect example of Indian craftsmanship and military magnificence. It is one of the oldest existing forts of Rajasthan after Chittorgarh. The fort is situated atop of the Trikuta hill amidst the sandy terrain of the Great Thar Desert. Initially the fort was built in the 12th century by Raja Jaiswal who shifted his capital from Lodurva to protect it from foreign invasions. The 250 feet tall wall fortified this fort from all sides and can be accessed through 30 feet sandstone pathway. The fort is famous for its 99 bastions which were used as platforms for guns. Out of the 99 bastions 92 of them were built between 1633 and 1647.
